The first Christmas after losing someone doesn't look like the adverts. There's an empty chair at the table, a stocking nobody fills, a name that catches in the throat halfway through a toast. If someone you love is facing that this year, you might be wondering whether to send anything at all, and what could possibly be right.
These are the questions people ask us most at this time of year. We've tried to answer them gently and honestly.
Every SHB Studio order comes with a free message card, so your own words can travel with the gift.
Should I give a Christmas gift to someone who is grieving?
Yes, if it comes from care rather than duty. Many people who are grieving say the hardest part of the season is the feeling that everyone else has moved on. A small gift tells them their person hasn't been forgotten, and neither have they. It doesn't need to be big, and it doesn't need to be festive.
What is a good gift for someone's first Christmas without their mum or dad?
Something that keeps that person part of Christmas. A small porcelain heart can hang on the tree, sit beside the cards on the mantelpiece, or stay by the bed long after the decorations come down. Every year it comes out of the box, it brings them back for a moment.

What can I give that won't upset them?
Grief is personal, so there's no perfect gift. A few things tend to land badly: jokes, anything loudly jolly, and anything that tells someone how to feel. Choose words that remember rather than words that try to fix.

Is a candle holder a good remembrance gift at Christmas?
Lighting a candle is one of the oldest ways of keeping someone close, and many families light one at the Christmas table for the person who's missing. It gives everyone a quiet moment to think of them, without anyone having to make a speech.
"Home, Family, Love" Tea Light Holder – £9.50
What does it mean when you see a robin at Christmas?
There's an old British saying: "When robins appear, loved ones are near." Plenty of people take comfort in spotting one in the garden on a cold morning, and the robin has become a gentle symbol of remembrance. A pair of soft robin socks carries that thought into an ordinary day, and warm feet on a hard morning matter more than they sound.
Miss Sparrow Festive Robins Bamboo Socks – £7.99
What jewellery is meaningful for someone who is grieving?
Something they can wear close, that nobody else needs to understand. In many traditions the dragonfly is linked with change and with the idea that the people we've lost are never far away. This one is made by hand in our Norfolk studio, with a gold lustre glaze, so no two are quite the same.
Handmade Ceramic Gold Lustre Dragonfly Necklace – £31
What if I can't be with them this Christmas?
Distance makes grief feel lonelier, for both of you. A tiny keepsake that says you're thinking of them can sit on a windowsill and do the job a hug can't.
"My Favourite Place is with You" Porcelain House Token – £5
What should I write in a card to someone grieving at Christmas?
Keep it short and real. You don't need the perfect words, and you don't need to mention Christmas at all. A few ideas:
- "Thinking of you and [name] this Christmas."
- "No need to reply. I just wanted you to know I'm here."
- "I'm missing [name] too. I'd love to hear your favourite memory of them."
- "Go gently this Christmas. You don't have to do any of it perfectly."
Use their person's name. People often avoid it for fear of causing pain, but many who are grieving say hearing the name is one of the kindest things anyone can do.
Is it okay to send something small?
Yes. A small gift sent with real thought means more than an expensive one chosen in a hurry. What they'll remember is that you noticed, and that you didn't look away.
When should I send a remembrance gift?
Early December is a good time, so it arrives before the hardest days rather than on them. UK post gets very busy close to Christmas, so ordering early takes the pressure off. And if you miss it, the quiet days between Christmas and New Year can be some of the loneliest, so a gift then is just as welcome.
