Chunky gold heart necklace, a Valentine's gift idea

What to Write in a Valentine's Card (When It's Not Simple)

Every February, the card aisle fills up with roses, "my one and only" and jokes about socks. That's lovely if your love life looks like a greetings card. Most people's doesn't.

Maybe it's very new and you don't want to say too much. Maybe you've been married for thirty years and "I love you" feels like something you say on the way out of the door. Maybe this is your first Valentine's on your own. Here are the questions we're asked most about Valentine's cards and gifts, with honest answers and a few lines you can borrow.

What should I write in a Valentine's card?

Write one true thing that only you could say. People rarely remember a poem. They remember that you noticed something real about them.

A simple shape that works for almost anyone:

  • Something you noticed: "I love the way you sing in the kitchen when you think no one is listening."
  • Something you're grateful for: "Thank you for making the hard weeks feel lighter."
  • Something about what's next: "I can't wait for more ordinary Tuesdays with you."

Three short lines in your own handwriting will mean more than the longest printed verse.

What do I write when it's a new relationship?

Keep it light, warm and honest. You don't need to say "love" if it's too soon. It's fine to keep it simple:

  • "I'm really glad I met you."
  • "You make me laugh more than anyone has in a long time."
  • "Here's to finding out what happens next."

A small gift fits a new relationship best. It says "I thought of you" without any pressure.

What do I write for my husband, wife or long-term partner?

After many years together, the most romantic thing is often being specific. Skip "to my wonderful wife" and say what they actually did this year.

  • "Thank you for every cup of tea you've made me without being asked."
  • "After all these years, you're still the person I want to tell everything to."
  • "We've had some hard chapters. I'd choose you for every one of them."
  • "I don't say it enough: I see how much you do for us."

What do I write if we're going through a hard time?

Sometimes Valentine's falls in the middle of an illness, a loss, money worries or just a tired season. A big romantic card can feel wrong. A short, honest one usually feels right:

  • "This year has been hard. I'm still here, and I'm still on your side."
  • "No big plans this year. Just you, me and a quiet night in."
  • "Thank you for holding my hand through all of it."

What if I'm single this Valentine's Day?

Then the card can be for a friend, or for you. More and more people celebrate "Galentine's" with the friends who've been there, and a gift to yourself after a hard year or a break-up is not selfish. It's self-love.

  • To a friend: "You've been my person through all of it. Happy Valentine's."
  • To yourself: "You're braver than you believe. This one's for you."

What about a friend who's lost their partner?

Valentine's Day can be one of the hardest days of the year for someone who is grieving. You don't need the perfect words. A short message that says "I remember too" is enough:

  • "Thinking of you and [name] today."
  • "I know this day is hard. I'm here if you want company, or quiet."

Frequently asked questions

Is jewellery a good Valentine's gift for a new relationship?

Small, simple pieces like stud earrings or a little pendant are usually fine. Anything very expensive can feel like pressure early on, so keep it light.

What do I write if I'm not good with words?

Keep it to one sentence and make it specific. "I love how you always save me the last biscuit" is better than a paragraph you don't mean.

Is it OK to send a Valentine's card to a friend?

Yes. A card that says "I'm so glad you're in my life" is a lovely surprise, and it isn't only for couples.

Whoever you're writing to this February, we hope they feel seen, loved and a little bit lighter.
